Performance Max reporting: what the black box will actually tell you

Written by Uptimal, the team that builds and operates Upbuild and runs marketing analytics for multinational clients across the globe. Everything below reflects how the tools actually behave, including the parts the platforms would rather not discuss.

Performance Max is the first campaign type designed to be reported on Google’s terms. The UI shows you what it chooses; the API exposes somewhat more; and the difference between teams that trust PMax and teams that fight it is usually just whether anyone pulls that "somewhat more" on a schedule.

What you can genuinely query

Campaign-level spend, conversions and value, day by day. Asset-group performance, which is where creative direction actually lives. Search categories and themes, coarser than Search-campaign query reports but real. Conversion split by action. That is enough to answer the questions that matter (is it efficient, is it growing, what is it leaning on) even though it will never hand you a placement list. Knowing where the wall is beats pretending it is not there.

The three checks worth running weekly

Efficiency drift: CPA or ROAS by week for eight weeks, PMax versus your Search baseline. Brand cannibalization: branded Search volume and PMax conversions on one timeline; if one falls as the other rises at flat totals, PMax is buying what you already owned. Asset-group divergence: the spread between best and worst asset group; a widening spread is the campaign telling you which creative to feed.

Each is one question to an assistant once Google Ads is connected: "PMax versus brand Search, weekly, eight weeks, flag the crossover" is the entire workflow, in Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot Studio or Gemini Enterprise.

A caution earned in production

PMax numbers move retroactively: conversion lag plus modeling means yesterday is not final for several days. Pull rolling windows ending a few days back for judgments, and never compare a fresh PMax week against a settled Search week; that comparison manufactures panic. If a number matters enough to act on, ask for the same window two ways (by conversion date and by click date) before believing either.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see what Performance Max is spending on?

Partially. The API exposes campaign and asset-group performance and search categories, not the placement-level detail you get elsewhere. The honest move is to pull everything it does expose, regularly, and judge trends rather than chasing a placement report that does not exist.

How do I check PMax search terms?

Search themes and category-level insights are queryable; query-level detail is limited compared to Search campaigns. An assistant with API access can pull what exists and compare categories over time, which catches drift a UI screenshot misses.

Is PMax cannibalizing my brand traffic?

Compare branded Search performance before and during PMax, and watch whether PMax conversions rise as branded Search falls at flat total volume. The pattern is visible in campaign-level data you can query conversationally.
