The wasted spend audit: one hour, ten platforms, by asking

Updated 28 Aug 2026·6 min read

Written by Uptimal, the team that builds and operates Upbuild and runs marketing analytics for multinational clients across the globe. Everything below reflects how the tools actually behave, including the parts the platforms would rather not discuss.

Waste in ad accounts is not dramatic. It is a search term spending €40 a month since March, times two hundred terms, times every account. Nobody hunts it because the hunting cost more than the waste; conversationally, the hunt is an hour across all ten platforms, and the five patterns below are where the bodies always are.

Pattern one: paying for words that never convert

"Search terms with spend and zero conversions, 90 days, sorted by spend, and flag the ones that have done this three months running" is the single highest-yield prompt in Google Ads. The three-month filter separates noise from policy: a term that has never converted since spring is a negative keyword wearing a delay.

Patterns two and three: fatigue and overlap

Creative fatigue is frequency up, CTR down, CPA up on one timeline: ask Meta or TikTok for exactly that trio by ad, eight weeks. Overlap is two campaigns or ad sets converging on the same audience and bidding against each other; conversion paths and audience definitions in one chat make the collision visible without a Venn diagram export.

Patterns four and five: the forgotten and the misaimed

Every account has an always-on campaign nobody has opened since the person who built it left: "campaigns with spend this month whose settings were last touched over a year ago" finds them. Then the geo and placement bleed: spend by location and surface with zero conversions ever; display placements and irrelevant geos absorb budget precisely because their line items are too small to notice individually. In aggregate they are a salary.

Ask your ad platforms directly, in Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot Studio or Gemini Enterprise.

Quantify, then ritualize

End the audit with one number: monthly spend on the flagged set, annualized. That number funds the ritual: the same five prompts monthly, or standing guards (zero-conversion spend passing a threshold pings Slack) so the waste self-reports. Agencies run this in week one of every engagement (the full onboarding version is in the client audit) because found money is the fastest trust anyone can buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find wasted spend in my ad accounts?

Hunt five patterns: search terms spending with zero conversions, creative past fatigue, audience overlap bidding against yourself, forgotten always-on campaigns, and placements or geos that never converted. Each is one question to an assistant with API access to your accounts.

How much ad spend is typically wasted?

Audits routinely find 5 to 15 percent of spend doing nothing, concentrated in long-tail search terms and campaigns nobody has opened in months. The number matters less than the recurrence: waste grows back, so the audit has to be a ritual.

Can AI cut wasted spend automatically?

A read-only setup deliberately does not touch campaigns: it finds and quantifies, you decide and act. That boundary is what makes it safe to run weekly against live accounts.
