How-to

Audit a Google Ads account with ChatGPT, in about 30 minutes

Updated 28 Aug 2026·6 min read

Written by Uptimal, the team that builds and operates Upbuild and runs marketing analytics for multinational clients across the globe. Everything below reflects how the tools actually behave, including the parts the platforms would rather not discuss.

ChatGPT will happily critique a screenshot of your Google Ads account, invent plausible numbers and call it an audit. The version worth running looks different: ChatGPT reads the account itself, through the API, and every claim traces to a query. Setup is ten minutes; the audit is twenty.

The ChatGPT-specific setup

You need a paid plan with Developer mode switched on: in ChatGPT, Settings, Security and login, Developer mode. Then Settings, Plugins, Browse plugins, the + button, and a New Plugin named Upbuild with the server URL https://connector.upbuild.app/mcp and OAuth authentication. Sign in with Google or Microsoft using the account that already holds Ads access, and the tools appear in the chat. The step-by-step with screenshots lives in the connection guide. Free for 14 days on the connector and 7 days on the platform, no card.

The five-question sequence

Run these in one thread so ChatGPT keeps the context: first, campaign inventory with budgets, strategies and 90-day performance. Second, the waste sweep: zero-conversion search terms three months running, sorted by spend. Third, the tracking check: conversions by action with counting methods, compared against GA4 if connected. Fourth, creative: ads by age and the fatigue trio. Fifth, 13 months of monthly totals so seasonality declares itself.

Playing to ChatGPT’s strengths

ChatGPT’s edge is the analysis layer on top of the pulls: ask it to build the summary table as it goes, then "turn the findings into a one-page audit: three numbers, five findings, three recommendations" at the end. Its data-analysis habits (running totals, quick charts, restructuring tables on request) make it strong at the deliverable step. Keep one audit per thread per account; a fresh thread per client keeps the numbers from cross-contaminating.

Upbuild is an AI platform for marketing data: AI dashboards, insights, exports and alerts, with a read-only MCP server as part of its toolset that brings your accounts into Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot Studio and Gemini Enterprise. Every tool, live data. Free for 14 days on the connector and 7 days on the platform.

What to watch

ChatGPT summarises eagerly: when a number matters, ask it to show the underlying rows it pulled. And the audit is read-only by design; when ChatGPT recommends pausing many keywords, executing that remains a human in the Ads UI, which is exactly the boundary you want on a new account. Prefer Claude’s flavour of the same audit? It has its own guide, as does Gemini Enterprise.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT audit my Google Ads account?

Yes, with live data: enable Developer mode on a paid plan, add Upbuild as a plugin, sign in with Google or Microsoft using the account that holds Ads access, and the audit runs as a conversation against the API rather than pasted screenshots.

Is it safe to give ChatGPT access to Google Ads?

Upbuild is read-only, so the assistant can query and never change anything: Upbuild never asks for permission to edit. Access is per person, revocable at any time.

What can ChatGPT find that the Google Ads UI does not show?

Nothing secret, but everything at once: cross-referencing search terms, change history, settings and trends takes six UI screens and one conversation. The finding rate comes from the cross-referencing, not hidden data.
