GTM MCP: read your containers by asking

Tag Manager questions are archaeology: which tags fire on purchase, what changed between version 41 and 43, where is that lookup table used. The GTM API has always been able to answer these; an MCP server means you no longer click through workspaces to do it. Upbuild’s GTM family reads accounts, containers, workspaces, tags, triggers, variables and version history, read-only.

Why read-only is the right default here

GTM is one of the few marketing systems where a bad write breaks revenue tracking in production. A read-only MCP connection gives you the audit and comprehension layer (the part that eats hours) while publishing stays in human hands inside GTM’s own versioned workflow. In our consultancy work this split is exactly how senior implementers already operate; the assistant simply removes the clicking.

GTM pairs naturally with GA4: when a metric moves, one conversation can check both what happened (GA4) and what changed in the tagging (GTM). Connection comes free with the standard sign-in with Google or Microsoft.
